It has been discussed for quite some time now why the opposite of addiction is not sobriety but connection.

We want to feel connected to ourselves an others and when we don’t know how to do that or can’t and we will look for things we can bond with. And based on our personality and intelligence we might reach for cigarette, food, alcohol or drugs.
